Our story

A consulting and learning practice built around connecting ideas to capability.

Ideas & Update was established in January 2009 as a people, learning, training and performance consulting unit serving individuals, corporate organisations and development-oriented organisations.

From the beginning, the intention has been practical: connect ideas, strengthen strategies, processes and tools, build skills and abilities, and help people and organisations update the capabilities they need to perform. That original positioning — providing value-driven people management, learning and performance solutions — remains part of the company’s identity as the work continues to evolve.

That has grown into a broader practice spanning people management, learning experience design, competency and capability development, performance consulting, coaching, team effectiveness and increasingly intelligent work. The common thread is still the same: understand what the work requires, build the right capability around it and help that capability translate into practice.

Established in 2009 · evolving without discarding the foundations
The original idea

Connect ideas. Strengthen strategies. Update capability.

The name has always reflected an intention to help people and organisations move from thinking into stronger practice.

The thread that continues

People, learning and performance remain connected.

Our solutions have broadened, but the work still starts with what people and organisations need to perform effectively.

Vision · Mission · Values

What guides the way we work.

Our vision, mission and values shape how we work with clients, how we design solutions and the standards we bring to every engagement.

Our Vision

Superior value in people, learning and performance.

To be recognised by our clients and associates as a people, learning and performance unit that develops and delivers superior value services and products to our customers.

Our Mission

Best fit rather than one size fits all.

To provide people, learning and performance solutions in line with a best fit philosophy that meets the needs of our clients and our clients’ people effectively.

Our Values

The standards we bring to every engagement.

01

Reliability

We show up, follow through and deliver value consistently. Clients should be able to trust both the quality of the work and the discipline behind it.

02

Excellence

We commit to high standards in what we design, facilitate, recommend and deliver — while continuing to improve the quality of the work.

03

Novelty

We bring fresh thinking, practical tools and new approaches where they add value, without confusing novelty with usefulness.

04

Teamwork

We collaborate with clients, participants and partners rather than simply consulting at them. Better solutions are usually built with the people closest to the work.

What we strengthen

The work sits across connected organisational capability questions.

Our services have evolved, but they continue to centre on the relationship between people, capability, systems and performance.

How we work

Understand → Design → Experience → Apply → Embed

A best-fit philosophy means the process starts with the need and the context, not with an existing programme or predetermined solution.

01

Understand

Clarify the organisational need, people context, performance expectation and constraints.

02

Design

Shape the right mix of learning, consulting, tools, support and experience around the need.

03

Experience

Create meaningful participation, practice, reflection and facilitated learning rather than passive delivery.

04

Apply

Connect the work to real decisions, behaviour, tools, conversations and workplace action.

05

Embed

Use reinforcement, managers, systems, follow-up and evidence to help capability continue beyond the facilitated experience.

What shapes the work

A few principles keep showing up across very different engagements.

Context before content

Start with the real environment.

Industry, culture, role expectations, capability maturity and participant reality should influence what gets designed.

Application before activity

Design backwards from use.

An engaging exercise matters when it helps somebody think, decide, communicate or perform more effectively afterwards.

Performance beyond participation

Attendance is only the beginning.

The more important question is whether the work supports capability, behaviour and performance in the environment that matters.

The people behind the work

Complementary expertise, one connected approach.

Our core team combines senior people and learning expertise with learning experience design, systems thinking, programme architecture, HR, competency, evaluation and quality assurance.

Why choose Ideas & Update

A few things have remained consistent in how we position the work.

These are not new website claims. They reflect the long-standing Ideas & Update proposition that has appeared across the earlier website and company materials.

01

Integrated solutions

Consulting, learning and coaching can be combined around the performance need rather than treated as separate services.

02

Experience since 2009

The practice has worked across people management, learning and performance for more than a decade and a half.

03

Flexible by design

Support can be project-based, one-off or part of a longer capability journey depending on what the organisation actually needs.

04

Cross-sector perspective

Experience across public, private and third-sector organisations helps the work remain context-aware rather than industry-blind.

05

Learning that goes beyond the classroom

In-house learning, public programmes, coaching and team experiences are designed to connect back to real work and performance.
